His first product which he made himself was a farm trailer made from scrap metal and old jeep axels left over from World War II assembled using an electric welder he purchased for £2 and 10 shillings. At the time of Bamfords death in 2001 JCB had become the largest privately owned company in Britain employing 4,500 people in 12 factories across the world and producing over 30,000 machines annually)
